The Bullet by Mary Louise Kelly

All these states were sent to the General Meeting in the Isthmus of its commissioners, who gave an oath to act together against the barbarians and formed a union. The first decision was the end of all strife (especially between Athens and Aegina); then the High Command of the Army was given to the Spartans; command of naval forces rightfully belonged to Athens, but Themistocles as authorized, generously refused this in order to avoid violation of unity of command. Then they were sent ambassadors to Argos, and Syracuse, at Corcyra (Corfu) and Crete, asking for help, but their mission was unsuccessful. The mighty tyrant Syracusan Gelon offered to send troops, but on condition that the most important command of all is entrusted to him. This requirement was an insult to the Greek pride, and refused his help. Shortly thereafter, Gelon been brutally attacked the Carthaginians invaded Sicily on impulse Xerxes. Corcyra, strong sea, he offered to put 60 triremes, but armed them in the summer of 480 BC. e. and sent to the Cape Tenaru to wait there, victory is on whose side. Argos and Crete in general declined to help.
