After Cyrus' death in 525 BC. e., he was succeeded by Cambyses, to undertake the conquest of Egypt. Conquered by the Phoenicians and the Greeks of Asia Minor were forced to make available to the Persians their ships. With such established by the fleet, and with the participation of the leader of the Greek mercenaries Flag, Cambyses became master of Egypt. After his death in 522 BC. e., the king of Persia became Darius Hystaspes.
To these wars it has something Polycrates, tyrant of Samos, worthy of mention, as a representative of the Greek sea power. Samians who have attained success in the field of shipbuilding, shipping, industry, agriculture and mining, differed, moreover, enterprise and ingenuity. The father of Polycrates, Samos chief of the Navy, revolted against the aristocratic government, overthrew it and became a tyrant. After his death, power passed to his three sons. Polycrates killed one brother drove the other and became sole ruler (in 536 BC. E.). With outstanding ability, an ambitious and rich, he soon built a fleet of 100 ships pyatidesyativeselnyh, which could equal no other. With this fleet, reigning over the sea, he began to conduct sea robbery in the whole archipelago: a tribute imposed on port cities, won the Milesians and lesbostsev, destroyed the city resisted him, won Delos and surrounding islands, and have taken all the Archipelago; he even intended to found the Greek Ionian sea union with the sacred island of Delos as its center; however the capital was to remain a city of Samos, which he won with the help of treasures made from beautiful cities that attracted scholars, artists and poets.
